چکیده

In a previous communication (Greval, Sen Gupta and Das, 1938) it was shown that (?') latent syphilis was encountered in an unselected hospital population rather infrequently, (w) that many conditions other than syphilis were responsible for a positive Wassermann reaction, and that (in) the Wassermann-positive rate in an unselected Indian population was likely to be under 10.25 per cent rather than 20 to 22 per cent of the previous writers. The work commenced in connection with the aforesaid items, in the Carmichael Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Calcutta, in 1937, has been continued. More figures are now available. They confirm the previous findings and reduce the Wassermannpositive rate still further.

Serological Wassermann problem cases.

The subject of Wassermann "Problem" cases is of interest not only to the serologist but to the physician or clinician, upon whom devolves the responsibility for diagnosis. In the past there has been too little critical judgment by clinicians in assessing the results of the Wassermann reaction, and many practitioners may still regard a positive Wassermann reaction as in itself a diagnosis of syp...

False Positive Serologic Reactions for Syphilis in Eosinophilia

Greval (1940) reported that some cases of ' Eosinophilia ' give false positive Wassermann reaction. More recently Menon (1945) and D'Abrera and Stork (1946) reported similar reactions in tropical eosinophilia. It was proposed to record results of Wassermann reaction and Kahn test in all cases of eosinophilia as a part of the investigation into the incidence of false positive serologic reactions...

In November 1935, a patient suffering from optic atrophy with a history of syphilis and a moderately positive Wassermann reaction came to the senior author through Lieut.-Colonel E. O'G. Biological false positive Wassermann reactions in Uganda.

In a country like Uganda where syphilis is common, yaws occurs, and many of the diseases known to cause false positive Wassermann reactions (such as malaria, leprosy, relapsing fever, smallpox vaccination, trypanosomiasis, lymphogranuloma venereum, and infectious hepatitis) exist, it seemed desirable to obtain some background information about the frequency of positive serological tests for syp...

ABO blood groups and acute biologic false positive serological tests for syphilis.

Detre (1906) first reported the application of the complement-fixation test of Bordet and Gengou to the diagnosis of human syphilis. 2 weeks before this Wassermann, Neisser, and Bruck (1906) had published their observations on the sero-diagnosis of experimental syphilis in monkeys. Saline extracts of syphilitic tissues were used in the preparation of antigens which were thought to be specific d...
